Photos of 360 degrees in the Vila Cruzeiro BOPE
Rio de Janeiro
Wonderful Town
Blessed by God
But until then
Terrified by traffickers
I'ma photographer and I am also in genetics, a Norwegian Gem
I love Rio!
Land of Christ Redeemer and Sugar Loaf
But also the scene of the movie box office record of national cinema: Elite Squad
And on November 25, 2010, the reality surpassed the Art ...
In Vila Cruzeiro BOPE supported by the PM, the Civil Police, Navy and Army, entered the den of smugglers in cars equipped with tracked armored, able to bridge the gaps that these absurdities put bums on the streets of the community.
I was watching TV and could not contain myself. My blood was pulsing and just thought: - I have to go there ... I have to document this historic moment in our country
In October 2009, when the marginal shot down a police helicopter, I was there on the Apes Hill document in 360-degree photos . And this time I wanted to go again. I could not just sit around watching TV.
Unfortunately it took a lot to get a vehicle to take me and so I arrived late, missed the opportunity to "get" with armor and other professional photographers who were there. Among these is a good friend to me, Felipe Dana, today's official photographer in Brazil AP was there too.
These 360-degree panoramas below show some tense moments this day, in which each police waited for their turn to enter the conflict area.
360 degree photos, click this link and see in Vila Cruzeiro BOPE
The sound was a mixture of noises in the distance .... shots, helicopters, people, moving vehicles ... well, a tense moment.
Photos 360 °: see the Armored Navy in Vila Cruzeiro
Many of the BOPE officers awaited the return of front-line fighters. In the rear were the others who were waiting inside the armored back, to change their positions and go into the slums below.

I hope you enjoy the immersive panoramas up and pass along to your friends.

Panorama 360 Santa Marta slum in Rio de Janeiro
From the top of the Santa Marta slum, located in Botafogo, Santa Marta, Rio de Janeiro, the panoramic view is stunning, worthy of a picture 360 degrees. But I preferred to portray a scene around my inner life, day to day here in these streets and staircases where everyone spends all day. Shine or rain, this is the obligatory path of the residents there.

She is known as Santa Marta because of a sculpture of the saint and namesake is stored in a chapel on the way up in the highest part of the slum.
This mixture of names began because journalists always called Dona Marta since the early 80s, because nearby, above, has a gazebo with this name.
The name seems that began long ago. Had a PDE. Clement would have bought all the land that now forms the district of Botafogo. And he in 1680, named the hill in back of the land honoring his mother, Martha, who died some years later when he was completing almost 100 years. Therefore was the name of Dona Marta.
And most interesting is that even though he was ordered to open a path, a path that was to connect the beach of Botafogo to their church, and what is now known as St. Clement Street, where I live today and that is one of most important of the neighborhood.
Another thing is crazy to think that ALL the land where the slum is now belonged to St. Ignatius!
Most of the early inhabitants of that place, was formed by families who came to work to enlarge the church of St. Ignatius. They were farmers who came from the Paraíba Valley shortly after the coffee crisis in 1929.
I always liked to go there and do my photos 360 degrees, because of the wealth of beautiful images that exist there. The people are friendly, courteous and willing to show the world the reality of living there.
These scenes that show the economy of the inhabitants, while the joy in the eyes of children playing and cats running up the stairs, make me think about the day to day on our society and the injustices that occur in our country
We are all accomplices, both of which happen to good and bad.
This is Brazil, and slums are part of everyday life.
I hope you enjoy it and leave your comments here on the site

Photo 360 degrees of Rio de Paz in Copacabana by rain
On Saturday, April 17, 2010, on the sands of Copacabana beach to NGO - "River of Peace" , has built an impressive backdrop of a slum shack.
The house was built with pieces of original shacks pulled from the rubble after the collapse that caused the greatest tragedy of Rio de Janeiro, when hundreds of people died buried by mud, debris, trees, earth, etc ...
In the scenario set up, all we could see inside the shack, the trash around the open pit on the floor with duct drainage and rats living with children playing there.
A fake corpse was also placed to show a little of the day to day lives of these people from disadvantaged communities.
A warning to all who go there.

If we all do a little bit, it will be better for everyone.
The waste that pollutes the rivers, the sea, clog storm drains, ditches, the untreated sewage that is played in nature, the slopes of the hills that are not adequately protected by preventing them from forming certain communities at risk of collapse, are some of the attitudes we can take.
Begin today to look a little more of his city and preserve the future of all.

The War of trafficking in the favela Jacarezinho Saturday, October 17, 2009.
It all happened like this:
And I were Felipe Dana talking and experienced the new Nikon D300S who had just arrived from the USA along with a new backpack Think Tank which is the most PRO pack of the international market today.
Suddenly the radio called, was a taxi driver, one among those who help one to transport us to and fro of informants and also work for us.
He called Philip the radio warning that in the neighborhood of Sampaio, close to the Hill of the Monkeys had just crashed a helicopter and exploded.
Philip looked at me and said - I'll run there, and you'll do 360-degree photos also.
My youngest son was still asleep. My wife was out for exercise and the older son was in school.
I stumbled and ran it in shorts and sandals, no time to put a shoe I had.
It was time to make some beautiful photos and documentary 360 degree immersive panoramas as I prefer to call it.
But I'm a purist, as they call it a dinosaur. Today the young generation of photo calls only 360 degrees even, so I jumped on the bandwagon too.
We ran through the streets of Rio Philip put a sticker magnetized press the outside of your car. My car is always glued to facilitate and be forgiven by the police when they see us running after a flagrant.
We arrived near the Hill of the Monkeys and the shooting was heard. Police would sneak between cars and hid behind trees and poles in hand guns, and in the middle of it all stunned people. Many cars went the opposite direction.
It was war.
We left the car on a sidewalk and decided to run through the streets behind to reach the point where the helicopter had crashed.
In all the streets screaming to go back, to be careful not to go there, in that direction.
I called Bruno Bezerra and told me what was happening and where it was.
I am 54 years old and 24 Felipe, we ran like crazy and I tried not to make ugly to accompany him to practice cycling cycling 3 x per week for 3 to 4 hours. And I just practice in front of computers CHAIR MACs.
We were there trying to shoot the helicopter wreck, which had become a lot of irons glowing, glowing red-hot in the middle of a football field a small Olympic Village, but police would not let anyone get close. The press was coming tbm, TVs had their helicopters flying around, many men circulated cameras trying to write something, and photographers from the newspapers began arriving in droves.
One complained PM me for wanting to shoot over it, my camera was 3 feet tall and I slipped over his head apologizing but saying that I had to protect him and his job showing the world what happened in Rio's favelas .
He laughed and said I was crazy, it was to get out before the Colonel sent me off with that contraption of hands.
I look at it this way and I see a TV cameramen Record speaks to the radio with a strange voice and looks up towards the helicopter Record.
Something was happening! And he was being imforma through the eyes of who was up there, seeing everything.
Suddenly he ran screaming to the car and the Record.
There was a riot, and not knowing why he ran the crowd panicked and everyone began to run aimlessly in all directions. Men, women, children and dogs.
I shouted pro Felipe pointing to the guy in the Record which came out singing in the car and tires.
A passing taxi slowed scared and stopped, Felipe did not think twice and just opened his door and jumped inside, I threw myself over him inside as well, the driver looked at us scared and I cried: - They are not weapons, are cameras, photographers are ...
Felipe then yelled even louder: - FOLLOW THAT CAR RECORD and we give you some money!
The driver was enthusiastic and took the stick in the car, a Vectra accelerating and advancing all the signs and going against the tide behind the car of Record.
Joked - You're enjoying it eh!
And the driver said: - I always wanted to do that!
And the stick sat in the car like crazy, chasing the same type 007.
Suddenly the sky turned black and began to enter the middle of a slum, was black smoke, but the stalled traffic, many people were running, cars shelving to either side, a riot in the streets of the slum.
Philip threw a hand grenade in the driver's cab and jumped.
I never ran so much in life, full of hanging equipment and by the middle of a slum in the middle moment of attack, panic and madness.
We all shouted as we passed through the midst of two houses and you could hear the gunshots still echoing away.
There fore in flames burned a giant bus. We were the first photographers to arrive. Only the Record was next.
You can see it in the first picture up when nobody else is close to the bus and not from my point of view center of the photo 360 degrees.
The bus began to blow the windows and tires and the police arrived.
I started shooting, and many photographers were coming too. The scene was crazy.
And again, everyone looked to the sky in another direction and distance was there another cloud of black smoke, the greater.
He started the madness again. But there was no taxi there, then we ride to a car and enter into the story, I had to go sit on top of Felipe and falling on top of another photographer in the car trying to convey your photos from the laptop. We ran like crazy and the car driver, a Siena Silver said only that he could not run more because the car was his and not the company. But anyway he was really going too fast.
In the backseat completely twisted thought that if I just knocked, I would be thrown or crushed against the front seats where a reporter super gentle promised that the next day would bring food and sandwiches for everyone.
This, of course, if we could survive another day hehehe.
We lost and suddenly we drove in circles through the streets of the region with the horn shooting for everyone out of the front, which included horse-drawn carts to pangas. At one point we saw the car in G1 was also lost running at finding ways to get the new focus of smoke.
That's when our driver took a guess and said: I will there, and took a street and right in front where we had this other fire.
It was in the Jacarezinho slum, right in front of the court of the samba school.
The scene was impressive, the smoke was too much, the air was heavy and the heat was great. I thought the photos would do 360 degrees all the time.
Many photographers and cars began to arrive and everyone rushed to take pictures.
My wife called me saying that she and my youngest son had just been to see me on TV record, on screen, I ran in front of the bus on fire.
I told him it was okay and that would make great pictures 360 degrees.
Then I came to know that the G1 also recorded on video and I appear in front of the camera photographing them at 360 degrees, just as suddenly when one of the blast appears Felipe Dana running for shooting on the other side.
And he shouted: - Ayrton fucking macbook battery is over, is almost zeroed I need to transmit my photos!!
There was no light in the vicinity, we found that behind the smoke of the bus, there were also two other buses in flames!
Gradually we are realizing that there was also a car that was leaned against the wall across the street and burned. Above the fire of a bus had a light transformer on the pole and was about to explode in the heat. That's when the wires melted and began to fall, I ran to the phone and spoke with Bruno Bezerra, another photographer who tweet associated with everything that happened, keeping me informed of what he saw on TV and the net, and I told him everything were going and how the photos were 360 degrees I was clicking over and over.
I let the phone down when running electrical wires to escape the fire.
Then I went back and picked up the phone and got to talk with Clício Barroso , President of Fototech, the best photographers of the Association of Brazil , of which we are also associated.
But the call went out in the middle and do not know if he heard me, but I said, or rather shouting, we were good, despite the sirens, fire and explosions he heard in the background.
Firefighters arrived and started throwing water to extinguish the fire. At this point consguimos Caveirão see that was on the other side of the fire where residents were flocking to see the scene of chaos.
With water, began to soot, and try to approach the fire to photos was an exercise in bad breath.
Little by little the fire was put out and Felipe told me: - Ayrton out of here I need to send in photos.
We ran through the crowd and had a van that was passing by, to pick up signals for a ride.
The driver looked at us with that guy who was not even hear anything inside the van because the sound at full volume ate loose playing a funk unbearable.
We asked him to take us back to Monkey Hill where we had left our car in the street. The guy did not want, then offer a "bump" and waved with a note cinquentinha, begging us out of there. Felipe said he needed to get there fast, because of the photographs.
The guy smiled, further increased the funk until I almost go deaf and went screeching like crazy and you're done, we move towards not know where, but for streets, contours over the sidewalks, intersections, against the tide, signs red, with a fucking insane and crazy funk that left me deaf. Detail, by the time he took off with the van, the back door was not closed right Felipe and almost falls out or in my lap, or remember.
I just thought the photos would go 360 degrees away.
The rest was normal, we daonde the car near the helicopter had fallen, many police were still there, and many even went to Vila Isabel, there in the Chopp Planet, to use the electrical outlet, and then transmit the photos to Felipe The Associated Press.
After that, I took Felipe back to the conflict zone, and returned to the south with the car, leaving him there.
His wife was wanting to hear from him and came to my house. We came together, and I told him he was fine.
My kids were waiting for me for lunch ... and life goes on forever with photos 360 degrees ![]()

The war on traffics Jacarezinho slum on October 17th
And that's how it Happened:
Felipe Dana and I Were Trying talking and discussing the new Nikon D300S That just HAD Arrived from the U.S. with the newest Think Thank backpack, one of the most PRO backpacks on the market nowadays.
Suddenly a taxi driver called walk on the talkie, he's one of the guys he read help us out here and taking us there and is Also some kind of informant.
Ha called Felipe on the cellradio saying That a helicopter just HAD Been knocked down and exploded in Sampaio's neighborhood.
Felipe Looked at me and said: I'm on my way there and if you come with me Can you take 360 pictures as well.
My youngest son was still asleep. My wife HAD left early to exercise and my oldest son was in school.
I Jumped on and left on my shorts and sandals, I did not even have the time to put on shoes.
It was the time to take some pretty photos and document 360, or an immersion panorama like I prefer to call Them.
Can I am what you call a dinosaur. The young people only call 360 photos Them I Decided to do the same.
We were running throughout Rio's streets. Felipe put some sort of sticker on his windshield saying That he was from the press. I always have one on my car, just in case if we needed to be "forgiven" by the cops who come to Investigate.
We got closer to Apes' We Could Already slum and hear the guns shooting. Between Cops Were hiding behind cars and light posts and trees with guns. And in the middle Were there a lot of people running around lost in the middle of chaos, a lot of cars Were going the wrong way too.
It was the WAR.
We left the car on the sidewalk and Decided to run on the streets to get a better view of the falling helicopter.
Were people screaming for us to come back, to be careful, not to go on that direction.
I called Bruno Bezerra on the cellphone and hin Told what was going on and where I was.
I am 54 years old and 24 Felipe, We Were running like crazy and I was Trying not to disappoint hin, Whom bikes three times a week for 3 to 4 hours straight. As for me I only sit in front of the computer in front of my Mac computers.
We were there Trying to take pictures of the wrecked helicopter. It was flamed Transformed into wrecks, burning in flames in the middle of the soccer field from a small Olimpic Ville. But the cops did not want to let anyone to get close to it.
The press was starting to Arrive too. Their TV stations Already HAD helicopters flying over the scene, a lot of camera men trying to get some images and newspapers Were photographers arriving in large groups.
The cop was complaining That I Was Trying to take pictures Almost on top of hin. My camera was 3 meters high and I was Trying to talk over hin saying That I was showing to the world what really Happened at Rio's slums and Protecting Somehow I was his job.
He started laughing saying That I was crazy and That i had better get out of there before the Sheriff Told me to do it so.
That's When I saw the cameraman Record TV Station from talking on the radio with a weird voice and looking up to Their helicopter.
Something was going on! Being informed he was from the person who was up there looking up at everything.
Suddenly he started running and screaming in his direction to car
It was crazy and without Knowing why he was running through the crowd That was in panic and was running all over the place. Men, women, children and dogs.
I yelled pointing at the Record Philip's guy who HAD got into his speeding car and left.
That Was The cab passing by stopped and scared Felipe did not think twice. He opened the door and Jumped and I Jumped on top of hin. And the driver Looked at us and scared I Told That We Were hin holding cameras not guns and that we Were photographers.
After That Philip yelled to the driver: Follow That Record's car and we will give you some money!
The driver got excited and started the car speeding, crossing all the red lights, going the wrong way Following the car.
We started joking telling hin That Actually he was enjoying all that.
When he said That he always wanted to do that.
He was running like crazy it was like 007 on action.
Suddenly the sky got darker and we got in the middle of the slum. There was the black smoke all over. There was traffic, a lot of people running, cars crashing, it was the chaos in the middle of the slum alleys.
Felipe Gave the driver the money and we Jumped out of the cab.
I HAD never ran in my life so much full of equipment and inside of a slum in the middle of the craziness and panic
Everyone was yelling while we Were going through the houses and We Could still hear the shot guns.
In front of us the bus was in flames. We were the first photographers to get there with Record's cameramen.
Can You See That on the 1st picture above When no one else is close to the bus anymore and normal on my point of view.
The bus windows and tires started to explode and the cops Arrived.
I started shooting pictures and some other photographers started to Arriva. It was a chaos.
And again everyone was looking at the sky and We Could see another dark smoky cloud far this time it was bigger.
And the craziness started again. There was not a cab there at this time so we Asked for a ride on this press' car. We got in and i had to sit on Philip's lap, falling over this other photographer who was Trying to put the pictures from his camera on his laptop.
The driver was running like a crazy and said the only reason That He Was not going faster was the Fact That The Car Was not his. But he was still going pretty fast.
On the back seat the only thing I Could think about was if we crashed ... I was going to be thrown against the front seats where the reporter was really nice the next day promising That we was going to bring sandwiches and food for everyone.
That of course IF we Survived one more day. We got lost and We Were Suddenly going in circles buzzing around the streets for everyone to get out. That included some carriages pulled by horses. At a Certain time we saw the G1's (another press) That car was lost too Trying to find the smoke, When the driver Decided to take a shortcut and we got exactly where this other fire was going on.
It was at the Jacarezinho slum, right in front of this samba's rehearsal spot. The scene was Impressing. There was a lot of smoke, the air was heavy and it was extremely hot and stuffy and I Could only think about the 360 pictures I was going to shot. A lot of photographers and started to Arrive Were running to take pictures. My wife called and said That her and my youngest son just HAD seen me on TV, while I was running if front of the bus on fire.
Told her I was fine and everything That I was going to take amazing 360 shots. After I Heard That G1 HAD Also recorded a video and I was right in front of Their camera taking 360 shots, explosion Happened When The Other So They show Felipe Dana running to take pictures from another angle. He was screaming: Ayrton, the Mac's battery is freaking Almost done and I have to get my pictures in it.
There was in power around. And We Found Out That behind the smoke from the flaming bus Were there two more buses on fire too!
Suddenly Realized That We Also there was a car on the other side of the street That was on fire as well.
Above the flaming bus there was a power line That Was about to explode because of the heat.
That was When the wires started to melt and started falling down. I started running and was on the phone with Bruno Bezerra, the other photographer I Knew That Was on twitter at the Same Time checking what was going on and keeping me informed about what he was watching on TV and on the web. I was telling HIM what was going on and how the 360 pics Were Coming in October
Felt my cell phone off while I was running from the falling electric wires. I Went back and got my phone and called Clício Barroso. Fototech's (The best photographer in Brazil's association) president.
The phone called was interrupted in the middle and I have no idea if he Could hear me speaking or yelling, because We Were in the middle of ambulances, fire and explosions.
Arrived and the firemen started hosing water to get rid of the fire. At this moment We Could See That the Caveirão (special car used by the special forces of Rio's police department) was Already on the other side of the fire Were people who live on the slum Were arriving to check the chaos.
With the smoke and the water trying to get close to the fire was making Almost impossible to breath.
Slowly the fire was extinguished and Felipe Told Me: Ayrton I have to get out of here to get this sent pictures.
We started running in the middle of the crowd and saw this van passing through and we Asked for a ride.
The driver Gave us That weird look and could not hear anything because of the terrible funk he was listening to on the radio.
We Asked Him to take us back to Monkey's slum Were We had left the car in the middle of the streets. He did not want to so we Offered hin hin Showed some money and a $ 50 bill's begging Him to get us out of there.
That Philip said he needed to get there fast because of the pictures.
The driver Smiled, Turned the volume even louder, to the point That I was getting deaf, and he left like a crazy, the burning tires and going in the direction of where I do not even know ... On sidewalks, wrong Ways, going through red lights and That funk was driving me crazy.
When he started the van was still the back door opened and Philip Almost felt off. I can not even remember the details. The only thing I Could think about Were the 360 photos I was going to get out of my camera.
The end was very normal. Were there a lot of cops (I mean a lot!) Were We had left the car still. So we Went to Vila Isabel and stopped at a bar to use the power to get the pictures to the AP. Right after I took Conflicts Felipe back to the spot and drove back to the area south Leaving hin there.
His wife wanted news about hin and cam to my house ... I Told her he was fine!
Were my wife and kids waiting for me to have lunch.
And life goes on ... Always with 360 degrees pictures!
THANKS to Shana Zanotta for the English translation!
